The SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay used to be a small stop on the World Surf League calendar. In 2023 it was a QS 1,000 event held in late February. Since then it has moved to December, and its rating has doubled to QS 2,000. This year's window runs Thursday, December 3, through Sunday, December 6.
That window includes the evening of Saturday, December 5, when the Rotary Club of Morro Bay holds the Lighted Boat Parade along the Embarcadero. The contest sits at Morro Rock Beach and the Morro Rock Parking Lot. The parade's official viewing area runs from Tidelands Park to the Rock. So for one Saturday in 2026, both events land on the same stretch of shoreline at the north end of town.
The rest of the fall calendar is good. This weekend is the one to plan around.
What the Rating Change Means at the Rock
The World Surf League's Qualifying Series is the regional ladder surfers climb toward the top tours. The number after "QS" sets how many ranking points an event awards. A QS 2,000 stop pays out twice as many points as a QS 1,000, so it gives competitors more reason to show up.
Morro Bay's event has run every year since 2020. In 2024, World Surf League coverage still billed it as a QS 1,000, with competition starting Thursday, December 5. By December 2025 it had moved up to QS 2,000. That year KSBY reported that community members gathered near the Rock to watch. Molly Cano, vice president of marketing at Visit SLO CAL, told the station the event welcomed "over 144 competitors."
Some recent winners:
- 2023: Mathea Dempfle-Olin and Taj Lindblad won the women's and men's titles.
- 2025: Eden Walla and John Mel won. It was Walla's second straight title at Morro Bay.
Visit SLO CAL was the returning title sponsor in 2025. It's a separate event from the SLO CAL Open Pismo Beach, which began in 2017 and ran in January this year. The World Surf League treats the two as separate stops under one county partnership. If you watched in Pismo last winter, this is a different contest.
What's Firm and What Isn't Yet
The World Surf League's 2026 Qualifying Series schedule lists both the men's and women's Morro Bay events for December 3 to 6, and marks both as "Tentative." Visit Morro Bay's event page gives the same four days. The dates line up. The league just hasn't moved the event out of tentative status.
Surf contests also run on a holding window, so not every day of those four is guaranteed to have heats. Last year, KSBY reported hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take those as a rough guide, not this year's schedule. The 2025 event also streamed live on WorldSurfLeague.com and the free WSL app. That's handy if you want to check the lineup from your kitchen before walking down.
Tides matter at this break. The 2025 contest fell during a King Tide. San Clemente surfer Makai Bray, who won his heat that day, described the problem to KSBY:
"With Morro Bay, it's always like you don't really want the high tide, you want the low tide, but sometimes it'll get too low with the King Tide and it's always harder to surf."
If you're picking one morning to go, check the tide chart along with the heat schedule.
Saturday, December 5, Hour by Hour
The parade starts at 6 p.m. Visit SLO CAL lists it as free. The listings disagree on when it ends. Visit SLO CAL says 8 p.m., and the Rotary Club of Morro Bay homepage says 7 p.m. Either way, get there before 6. The organizer page also says that if unsafe weather cancels the parade, it won't be rescheduled.
The official viewing spots, from south to north:
- Tidelands Park, at the south end, where you can also watch from your car.
- The Embarcadero walk, where some restaurants may have window seating.
- Franklin Riley Park, another car-viewing option.
- Designated parking along the road to the Rock, the north end of the route.
That last stretch is where the two events meet. If the surf contest runs on Saturday, the Morro Rock Parking Lot will already be busy during the day. No event parking plan for Coleman Drive has been posted for 2026. Plan as if the spaces near the Rock will fill early.
Here's a way to string the day together:
- Morning: Coffee and beignets at The Second Line, 897 Main St. It's open daily from 7 a.m. to noon. The Tribune reported that owner David Perlis moved the business into a permanent shop this fall after years of pop-ups at farmers markets in San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and Cambria.
- Late morning: Walk or bike down to Morro Rock Beach and catch a few heats.
- Afternoon: Head back up toward the Embarcadero.
- Early evening: Santa's House at the Embarcadero opens at 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and visits are free. Stop in before the boats arrive, because it closes at 8 p.m. and that may be when the parade ends.
- 6 p.m.: Be in your viewing spot for the parade.
The Rest of That Week
The busy stretch starts before Saturday and keeps going after it.
- Thursday, December 3: The surf contest window opens.
- Friday, December 4: Last day of the Morro Bay Art Association's Annual Winter Faire & Juried Craft Show, which opens November 5. Santa's House opens the same day.
- Saturday, December 5: Contest, parade and Santa's House all on the same day.
- Sunday, December 6: Last day of the surf window. Santa's House is open again.
- Friday, December 11: A holiday Shop Sip & Stroll, with details still marked "coming soon." Same night: the Latecomers Holiday Show with Central Coast duo Shari Fortino and Michael Smothers.
- Through December 20: Santa's House stays open, with final dates on December 18, 19 and 20.
The Winter Faire runs daily for about a month, so you can shop it any day before the busy weekend.
Between Now and Then
There are about six weeks until December 3, and a few things worth doing before then.
This Sunday, October 25. The Morro Bay Maritime Museum hosts a free Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1210 Embarcadero. Activities include fish painting, knot tying, sandcastle building and fishing games.
Through November 1. By the Sea Productions is staging "Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors." The run opened October 16.
Saturday, October 31. Visit Morro Bay lists a Halloween Spooky Soirée.
Most weekends. Central Coast Outdoors and Grassy Bar Oyster Company now offer a combined tour: kayaking on the bay plus oyster shucking and tasting. It's a good thing to book if guests are coming for the parade weekend.
Any evening. Big Rock Tabletop opened this year at 620 Quintana Road. According to The Tribune, owners Christopher Daly, Paul Perez and Matthew Ester stock Magic: The Gathering, One Piece and Pokémon cards. Large tables are free to use daily from 1 to 9 p.m., and there are game nights every evening, with Friday's Magic night the most popular. It's a dry spot if wind and rain shut down the beach plans.
Through February. A local October guide notes that monarchs start settling into the eucalyptus at Morro Bay State Park and Sweet Springs this time of year, and the overwintering season runs into February. If the Rock is crowded on December 5, the groves are a quieter walk that same morning.
If you live near the Embarcadero or out toward the Rock, you know how much a single weekend can change your street. Some homeowners also start wondering what their place is worth in a town that keeps adding reasons to visit in December. If that's you, The Mike Oliver Group can give you a straightforward, local read on it. Request Your Home Valuation, and we'll see you down by the water on the fifth.
